What You’ll Need to Buy Glasses Online

May 7th, 2015 by firmoo No comments »

If you’re running into the same issues (and you will when you visit your local optometrist), here’s how you can go about buying your glasses online:

1. You’ll Need your Eyeglass Prescription

How to Buy Glasses OnlineIf your old eyeglass prescription is still bring clear vision in your present lenses, then call up your optometrist to get your prescription. Note that you will not be able to use a contact lens prescription (the two are different). If your prescription is outdated, then you will have to go to an optometrist to get a new one. General eye exams are usually covered by your vision insurance, if you have one. Check with your vision insurance provider to be certain.

Here are some terms you’ll need to be aware of when ordering.

  • OD (Oculus Dexter) means your right eye
  • OS (Oculus Sinister) means your left eye
  • The Sph or Spherical correction is how near (-) or far (+) sighted you are. If you have ‘PL’, that means you are at zero.
  • Add is for bifocals
  • Cylinder and Axis is for astigmatism, meaning that your eyeball is not perfectly spherical.

2. You’ll Need your Pupillary Distance

Pupillary Distance (PD) is the distance between your pupils, usually measured in millimeters. Pupillary distance generally falls between 54 and 68 mm. Optometrists will usually take this measurement during your exam, but if they don’t, then you can measure the distance yourself with a mirror and a ruler.

Most optometrists will not write this number on your prescription, because they know that it gives you the ability to shop online. Ask them to write this number in, if they haven’t.

The image below represents an example of a pupillary distance of 62mm.

3. Be Careful of Add-Ons

Eyeglass retailers online will often suck you in with extremely low advertised prices (i.e. ‘Complete set of glasses for only $9!’, however they have add-ons that really crank up the price – anti-reflective coating, anti-scratch, poly-carbonate lens, etc.

The best thing to do is to figure out exactly what you want, and then find out what 3 or 4 different online retailers would sell for that exact same model, so that you are comparing apples to apples. For instance, if you know you want a memory titanium frame with a slight tint and anti-reflective coating then shop around for that exact same pair elsewhere. Some include the add-ons and others don’t, so go with the final price, not the advertised price that gets you in.

4. Shopping for Glasses Online? You Need to Really Look Around for the Best Deal!

When shopping for glasses, don’t worry about the brand. A pair that I purchased under a generic brand was much better than any of the designer comparables that I saw at the optometrist. There are a few retailers that seem to have extremely competitive prices, that I’d recommend comparing to the others:

How To Take Care Of Your Eyeglasses

May 7th, 2015 by firmoo No comments »

Proper eye care goes beyond just your eyes. If you wear glasses it’s very important to take the best possible care of your lenses. Broken or damaged glasses might not hurt your vision in the long-term, but they can interfere with your vision as well as cause painful headaches.

Good Eyeglasses Care Is Good Eye Care

1 – Keep them in a case.

It’s tempting to just throw your glasses onto a side table at night, but that’s asking for accidents to happen. Keeping them in a solid case when not in use will protect against most everyday damage and accidents.

2 – Only use soft cloths to wipe them.

Different kinds of lenses have varying scratch-resistance, but the easiest way to accidentally scratch them is by “cleaning” with improper materials. Cotton and other rough fabrics will put tiny scratches in the lenses that, over time, build up to create constant refractions, or “lens flair” effects.

These can make the glasses distracting to wear, as well as increase your chance of eye-strain headaches.

3 – Never wear broken lenses.

Avoid wearing broken lenses unless you truly have no other option. Besides impairing your vision, broken lenses have a much higher chance of breaking further. If this happens, they’re far more likely to cause eye damage with shards or slivers of glass or plastic.

4 – Occasionally clean with mild detergent and disinfectant.

It’s not necessary to clean your glasses as often as contacts. However, over time they will build up dirt and grime (especially around the nosepiece and rims) and a layer of oil can form on the lenses. They’ll last longer and be more hygienic with a thorough wet cleaning about once a week.

5 – Wear Sports Goggles For Sports

Only true sports goggles are rated to protect your eyes against an impact to your corrective lenses. Both glasses and contacts increase your risk of eye injury from a hit to the face.

And, of course, don’t forget to update your prescription at least once a year! Contact your Phoenix eye doctortoday for more eye care information.

The Right Way to Clean Your Eyeglasses

May 7th, 2015 by firmoo No comments »

We all know how frustrating it can be trying to see clearly through a smudged pair of glasses; clean lenses can really make a world of difference. While it may not be something that you pay much attention to, the way you clean your lenses can also make a difference, not only for your vision, but for your eyewear as well.

Unfortunately, most eyeglasses owners are guilty of the number one crime when it comes to caring for their eyewear: breathing onto the lens and then wiping the resulting vapor away using the corner of a shirt or garment. Not only is this an inefficient way to remove dirt, it actually can damage your lenses as clothes carry dust, which when wiped onto the surface of your lenses, can result in scratches. Sometimes hard fabrics can also damage lenses.

The easiest way to get rid of dirt and residue on your glasses is simpler than you’d think. Start by running the front and back of the lens under warm water. Next wash the lenses carefully with a mild soap such as dish soap together with warm water. Once that is done, wipe the soap off in a circular motion as you once again rinse the glasses under warm water. Repeat if necessary and then dry your glasses using a soft cotton towel. There are also cleaning solutions that can be purchased to protect the anti-glare and anti-scratch coatings on glasses.

Although tissue, paper towels and napkins are often convenient to use for a quick cleaning, they are not a wise option as they are made up of rough fibers that more often than not leave debris behind. Another common cleaning substance – saliva – is not only unhygienic but also ineffective in properly removing dirt and smudges. Additionally, it is crucial to avoid using ammonia, bleach, vinegar and window cleaner to clean your specs as these substances contain chemicals which can damage the coating on your lenses.

Of course the next time you visit your eye doctor feel free to ask us for one of the microfiber cloths made especially for cleaning eyeglasses, which are helpful for a dry touch up of your glasses during the course of the day. Try to keep the cloth in a contained place away from dirt such as inside your eyeglasses case.

Another cause of dirty glasses is poor alignment – when the skin or eyelashes touch the lens, smudging is a never-ending problem. You can return to the eye doctor and ask the optician if it is possible to adjust the glasses for optimal alignment of the glasses. Be careful when you first purchase eyewear that the frame fits well so you can avoid this problem.

Get the most out of your eyewear. Keep your lenses clean and clear so you can see your best.

CARING FOR YOUR EYEWEAR

May 7th, 2015 by firmoo No comments »

When you buy a new pair of prescription eyeglasses or sunglasses, you spend a lot of time and money finding your perfect pair. Taking care of this investment is one of the best things you can do. And if you wear contacts, it’s just as important to properly clean and care for them. Knowing how to care for your eyewear will make a big difference in how well you see and how much you love wearing them.

Cleaning eyeglasses

CLEANING EYEGLASSES

Cleaning your frames and lenses regularly can help you see clearly and keep your purchase looking new. While it may seem like any cloth and cleaner could wipe glasses clean, it’s best to use an eyeglass cleaner and microfiber cloth specifically for eyewear. Never use regular household glass cleaner or ammonia based products as these can cause damage. If you’re unsure, ask your sales associate to recommend cleaning materials.

To clean your glasses, spray them with eyeglass cleaner and wipe them dry with a lens cloth or soft, clean cloth. If you see scratches while you’re cleaning them, bring them into a LensCrafters store and ask an associate for their recommendation.

Without regular cleaning, you may notice a buildup of oil and dirt, which can make it difficult to see well. Remember, you may not be the only one to notice. This build-up can be seen through your lenses by someone talking to you—one more reason to keep them clean.

Lady Gaga sports strange tassel sunglasses in New York.

May 7th, 2015 by firmoo No comments »

Even though this is one of her better style choices (getting flashbacks of that meat dress yet?), Lady Gaga’s tinted tassel sunglasses are still rather strange.

In fact, we can’t help but think she has nicked the tassels from her grandma’s curtains!

Gaga arrived at LAX airport on Friday (17 April) clutching her adorable little black pooch, Asia, in this dark ensemble complete with a wide brimmed suede hat and a jet black cape coat that showed off her tattooed arms.

Lady Gaga’s bodyguard comes to the rescue

But it looks like odd sunnies soon began to obstruct her view, as the award winning singer was forced to hand poor little Asia over to her body guard while she waded through a sea of paps, who had arrived to meet her on her return from a performance in Nevada earlier this week.

At least the star didn’t topple over, hound in hand!

5 Summer Hairstyles & Trendy Sunglasses To Pair While You Enjoy All This Glorious Weather

May 7th, 2015 by firmoo No comments »

It’s finally that time of year again: soaking up the sun on lunch breaks, weekend strolls around the neighborhood, and, of course, experimenting with summer hairstyles andtrendy sunglasses. I know, I didn’t think it would ever happen either! What better way to celebrate the season than rocking some sunnies and ‘dos that even The Sartorialist would wanna capture for Insta?

There isn’t one! So to honor this momentous shift in our social calendars — happy hours al fresco, anyone? — I’ve rounded up 5 of our favorite sunnies trending amongst the fashion elite and paired them with low-effort ‘dos any lazy gal can master on-the-go. After all, with rising temperatures and increasingly packed schedules, who has time to fuss over appearances? As a wise group once said, “it’s summertime and the livin’s easy.”

Don’t be afraid to experiment with playful patterns, bold finishes or experiemental frames this year. With the introduction of cool-kid startups like Warby Parker shaking up the scene, quality eye wear with a sense of style has never been more accessible. And thanks to social phenomenas like #IWokeUpLikeThis, undone hair is more a fashion statement than a lack of effort. Without further ado, meet the five looks that’ll rule your beauty arsenal ‘til fall:

1. Bold Prints & Lady-like Tresses

Take a hint from the leading ladies of a bygone era and don a paired down version of the 1950’s Hollywood starlets. Frames dressed up in bold prints, like this silvery animal print, add sass to any outfit. Whether a true cat-eye or a more subtle version like these Etnia Barcelona pair, strutting a deep side part and sweep of your favorite red shade is the perfect modern ode to Sophia and Marilyn.

2. Clear Frames & Half Buns

With the Brooklyn sensibility spreading like wild fire — we’re looking at you Portland and Pittsburgh — it’s no surprise their style is infiltrating the fashion scene too. Half ponies are no longer exclusive to your nineties-childhood-photo-nightmares; they’re new and improved and now comes in bouncy bun form. Perfect for greasy hair days, match the cool girl half bun with clear frames, like these ones from Warby Parker.

3. Mirrored Lenses & Sleek Ponies

Origin: cocky state troopers or Cancun-bound frat boys? Debate still withstanding, nearly every style board on Pinterest boasts a pair of mirrored shades, now. And I don’t hate it. Knockaround’s more feminine version take a cue from the summer sunset. Rocked with a sleek pony, orange lip and monochrome outfit, you’re set for a stroll on South Beach, Montauk, or just down to your favorite coffee shop.

4. Matte Frames & Loose Braids

When in doubt, take small risks. A modern twist on a proven classic is the formula for success, like these Brooklyn Spectacles. A black, menswear-inspired frame takes on new life with a matte finish. It’s simple, it’s elegant, it should be a go-to. To avoid looking too stiff, twist your locks into a casual braid — one that looks like you slept in it. Achieve this perfectly undone plait by lightly pulling at individual sections and loosening pieces around your face. Heck, just run your fingers through it!

5. Uniframes & Top Knot

OK, fine. I invented the term “uniframe” — I think. Sunnies are no longer simply two lenses and two ear pieces, brands have upped the ante by creating cool and complex frames that flip, twist, and even feature little bridges between your eyes. In my opinion, Etnia Barcelona nails it again with this brilliantly bad ass pair. We’ll takeTerminator ’tude with a side of cobalt blue any day. Complete the combo with an out-of-this-world top knot and leather bomber for ultimate post-apocalyptic domination. Poker face sold separately.

a bit about the man behind the blog. lately.

May 7th, 2015 by firmoo No comments »
Allow me to update you on the main man in my life, because quite a lot of unusual and exciting things have been going on. In no particular order of importance: his beautiful long hair was hacked off by a new stylist, he is wrapping up two months of sobriety for some impending liver blood work, he finally got new glasses and he has broken his foot.
Now I realize that is a lot to swallow so let’s start with the more serious of offenses. That hair! Just kidding.  The liver thing isn’treally a concern, probably a life lesson not to get annual blood work right after a stomach flu and so forth. He’s surviving his sobriety but not particularly enjoying it. The end is in sight for that! Six more days!
Now, the foot. Oh yes the foot. Last week he stepped on a trowel in the garage and injured his right foot. A trowel he had placed there and stepped over and over for days without moving. As the good wife I am I had too stepped over it for days without moving it, but felt it was my duty to leave it there to prove a point. He was limping around the rest of the day and by morning it had only gotten worse. My father took him to Urgent Care for an X-ray where the doctor informed him yes, his foot was broken clean through. It just didn’t happen last week. It happened last month. And was healing. And the trowel aggravated it. Happened. A. Month. Ago. Have you ever heard of such nonsense? Matt has no idea what the original injury was. He has been climbing roofs. Digging gardens. Digging sandboxes. Climbing roofs. All with a busted up foot. So not no more he’s not! Crutches and a boot and rest is ordered for him. And I get to take over all the fun things like mowing and grocery shopping and driving. And he gets to do things like hold Dom a lot more. He has decided he is either The Wolverine or the Matrix reset itself. That’s his story.
And lastly the new glasses! Let me tell you a little tale about a pair of eye glasses. This tale begins well before I knew Matt, a date which he believes is during his junior year in high school. He got a pair of glasses. Seen below. When we were young and thin and tan and slept eight plus consecutive hours each night. And didn’t break our feet without knowing. Ahem.
These very same glasses have survived college, our wedding, countless vacations and three children…. They have been bent and scratched and sat on and abused and worn daily. And yet… he refuses to get himself a new pair! If I had a dollar for every time I heard him mention needing new glasses I could have purchased him new glasses 100 fold, but Matt hates to spend money on himself. On his appearance that is. Cue an email from Firmoo asking me to review my experience with their site and their products and I instantly thought ha! I can force Matt to finally get a new pair of glasses! It’s all for the blog honey (yes from time to time I do call him honey).
Having never ever ordered a pair of glasses other than sun, I found the website to be just perfect. I Matt chose the glasses he liked and then you can select lens coatings and so forth as well as enter in your prescription which I thought was actually pretty cool, I felt all ophthalmologist like. The glasses Matt chose are these. I placed my order on a Tuesday and by the following Monday we had the glasses. So so fast! Straight from the man’s mouth, they are “awesome”! He is nothing if not succinct. And just like that… A fresh new look. Over ten years later. Even David commented and said dad! I like your new glasses! And I am NOT lying. The entire experience has been nothing short of a breeze. So thank you Firmoo!!
New customers can get 50% off their frames site wide by clicking here. Maybe your husband needs to say goodbye to his college lenses as well? No? Just me? Ah well.
And that’s what is going on in this residence with Matt as of late. Living the dream hoping on hair growth, iciing a foot, wearing new eyeware all whilst not enjoying his favorite beverage.
And a word to the wise? Don’t leave the trowel on the steps.

Firmoo Glasses and 50% Off Frames

Firmoo glasses

Hello again lovelies! Today I’m going to be talking to you about eyewear. I’ve actually worn glasses since high school but I’m not going to lie, my first pair looked like something that even Harry Potter would turn down. I used to try and avoid wearing my glasses which obviously isn’t recommended but I disliked them that much! A lot has changed since then and eyewear has definitely developed providing plenty more options to suit individual style and taste. I feel that to be comfortable wearing my glasses, I need to really like them.

Recently Firmoo* contacted me and asked if I’d like to try a pair of their glasses. I’d never even considered buying frames online but there is something quite appealing about not having to leave the house to get a new pair. The website itself has a huge selection of frames offering different styles and colours to suit your personal taste. Even if you don’t wear prescription glasses, you can get what some like to call a fashion pair.

Process:
Now, I was initially worried about not being able to try each pair on but Firmoo provide a system which allows you to upload a photo of yourself to see how they look. I love over sized glasses so I chose a pair that had a slight cat eye and a tortoise shell frame… All my favourite looks in one! Once you’ve picked a pair you can then enter your prescription (if you have one), your requirements such as anti glare etc. and your pupil distance which is fully explained on the site. All you have to do is wait for parcel to arrive. Mine was delivered in under a week which was amazing considering that they were shipped from the other side of the world.

Product:
I love it when a company puts a little effort into the decorative side of things. Firmoo completely surprised me with an adorable map styled case, a small bag, a cleaning cloth and a screw driver for adjusting the sizing. They really did cater for everything. My glasses fit, they feel sturdy and comfortable and most importantly they do their job. I just love the way they look. What I haven’t mentioned yet is the pricing. I feel like a fool for spending over £100 on my previous pairs when the frames on this site can be as low as £17.00. You do have to pay for the lenses as well but this is nowhere near as expensive as what I was used to paying.

Overall, I’m definitely impressed with the service and quality that Firmoo provided plus it’s opened my eyes to a whole new world of online shopping which is always exciting. If you’re interested in checking out Firmoo’s site you can click here. I’m also happy to share with you that you can get 50% of on your first set of frames. If you’d like to redeem your code click here.

TIME TO SWITCH IT UP – NEW HAIR! NEW SPECS! NEW LIP STIK!

May 7th, 2015 by firmoo No comments »
Hello Sassy Peeps!

Since the season is changing I felt that it was time to switch things up a bit. I decided new hair; new specs and a new lip color would do the trick. Although I am a natural girl at heart I still love the straight look; especially the “Bob”. I haven’t straightened my hair in years so I obtain these looks by wearing wigs. I always keep a few on hand and pull them out when feeling especially sassy.

This specific time, the feeling was triggered when I tried Ben Nye Makeup‬ Lipstik (LS 8 Cranberry) for the first time. It is bold but not to bold, glides on smoothly and lasts throughout the day. Shortly after receiving the lip color I got a new pair of specs from an online optical company calledwww.firmoo.com. I am totally obsessed with their selection of glasses. I think I have well over 10 pairs and my collection continues to grow. They always keep fresh and current frames in stock for self-proclaimed fashionista’s. Additionally, they always have great sales, and for a limited time only are offering new customers 50% off frames just by clicking on on this link http://www.firmoo.com/z/new-50-off.html.

After pairing the LS 8 Cranberry and the firmoo’s I immediately knew that this look called for new hair. So I happiness ran to the closet and pulled out my Jessie J Inspired Bob. I put it on and felt that everything was complete. I know wigs aren’t for everyone, but they can be amazing for several different reasons.

See why below:
  • They cut about 30 minutes off my daily routine – When I wear my natural hair it takes me between 30 to 40 minutes to complete a look.
  • New look, New attitude – It doesn’t matter if you are creating a new look solely for yourself or to spice up your love life, a different can spice up that attitude. I am not dating, but if I were I am sure my significant other would appreciate those random changes.
  • Washable & Easy to Maintain – Most wigs are washable. I have gotten at least 5 good washes out of mine and they still maintain their shine.
  • Cost Effective – The brands I purchase are very cost effective. They range from 29.99 to 49.99. My fav’s are Bobbie Boss and Equal. They are super comfy and fit my big head really well. LOL!
  • Rest the hair – I love giving my natural hair a rest. If you are not careful to much tugging and pulling can cause breakage.
  • Unfazed by weather conditions – While wearing a wig I am sooo unfazed by the heat and humidity.
I am not sure how look I will maintain this new me, but for now I am satisfied. Stay tuned for more looks to come. Until then

Have A Happy Healthy, and Remember to Always…
Stay Sassy!
